Anti-Poverty and Disability Advocate
Valerie Wolbert is a longtime anti-poverty and disability advocate. She is the past president of People First of Manitoba, a non-profit organization that advocates for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities. She works tirelessly to advance the concept that all people with disabilities, regardless of its type or severity, can live in the community when they receive all the necessary supports and services. Valerie has accomplished many things in her lifetime. She fought for and won her legal capacity and the right to make her own decisions. She is particularly proud of her involvement in the making of the People First Of Canada documentary film The Freedom Tour. It was the first documentary produced by people with intellectual disabilities in Canada. Along with her People First work, Valerie gives of her time, energy and skills to help others in her community. Since 2011, Valerie has served on the Canadian Museum For Human Rights Inclusive Design Advisory Council (IDAC). She strongly believes that housing is a human right. No one should have to live on our city's streets. We can end homelessness! Valerie is proud to be associated with the Downtown Winnipeg Biz CEO Sleepout. It deserves your support too!
